UI UX Study case — Redesign IKEA Indonesia website
Disclaimer : Before you reading my study case, I’m really sorry if my english not that good, I’m still learning to speak/write well in english, hope you can understand what’s the point of my study case that i write down here, thank you so much.
A. Introduction.
Greetings! Hi everyone my name is Iqbal maulana, I love to create a UI/UX design. and i strated learning about UI design around 3 years ago with some of help from so many sources on the internet, but now i learn how to make a great UI/UX design by participating course at Eduwork.
B. Overview.
We all know that ikea is one of the biggest furniture company in this world, this company offering/selling interior product to public with so many varieties of products with a simple design on their website, but at some point everytime i’m accessing IKEA website my mind said “it can be better”.
C. What do i do?.
As u can see on the top of this article, i re-designing website of ikea.co.id, and my role in this study case is UI/UX design, im designing this prototype from scratch, i put all my thoughts, solutions, and my creativity with some help of the internet power for refferences.
I create this prototype website using figma ,and figjam.
D. Design process.
On this Design process i use a popular design methodology ,it’s design thinking.
“Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems.”
https://www.interaction-design.org/literature/article/5-stages-in-the-design-thinking-process
Stage 1 - Empathize.
- Observation.
I made some observations on the ikea website to know or feel where’s the point that could’ve potentially be a problem(s), after trying and do some interactions with ikea website i noted a few points that could be a problem for users when they accessing this website. - Research plan (Secondary research).
Based on user reviews on the internet, i found there’s some users complaining about UI and UX of ikea website, and from the data that i’ve collected, many of them complaining about is the process of checkout items its too complicated and so many stage when user want to checkout their items so its kinda annoy them.
so my research plan is, im gonna figuring out user problems by simplifying the checkout stage and some other problems that must be fixed. - Objectives.
a. Find out how user’s behavior while checking out items on the IKEA website.
b. Find out what pain points users while their accesing the IKEA website.
c. Find out how users feel after checking out their items on the IKEA website.
d. Find out thing(s) that can make user satisfied by shoping on the IKEA website. - Methodology.
Qualitative — In-Depth Interview - Sample specifications.
1. 20–48 years old
2. Student or employee in any field
3. Fluent in bahasa
4. Live in indonesia

6 march 2023 — Interview
Stage 2 — Define.
- User persona.
The first step of define that i did was to create a user persona. I created user persona from users after running usability testing. User persona are needed to describe potential user based on the research that has been done.
- User journey.
From user journey map i can know behaviour of user when theiy do some activities on the website, i also can find pain point from user journey that can improve for design.
- Pain points.
The next step i did was creating or find out the pain point(s) of the IKEA website based on data that i’ve collected from secondary research.
here’s a few of the pain points that i’ve made :
- How might we?.
after i have a several pain points, there’s some ideas or assumptions popping up in my head ,and probably that can be a solution.
here’s my assumptions :
Stage 3 — Ideate.
After defining the issues ,The next step is Ideate stage.
at this stage i create Solution idea, Affinity diagram, Prioritizing idea, User flow, Wireframes, Design system, Hi-fi design.
- Solution idea.
at this stage i converting all the defined issues into a solution idea , here’s my solutions idea :
- Affinity diagram.
after i converting the defined issues into solution idea, now i categorizing the solutions into affinity diagram to make the design process easier.
here’s the affinity diagram :
Prioritizing idea.
Next step is prioritizing idea, when categorizing the solutions idea is done now i will choose which ideas should be prioritizing.
here’s the image of prioritizing idea :
- User flow.
I created a User Flow to describe the steps of where the users will go through, Start from sign in/register untill user receive the product.
- Information architecture
- Wireframes.
- Design system.
- High fidelity design.
Stage 4 — Prototype.
I make the prototype of this IKEA website new design using figma which is the same as i designed the hi fi design and lo fi ,if you want to try the prototype ,i put the figma prototype link below.
Stage 5 — Usability testing.
In the final stage of design thinking methodology ,I do a usability testing with a guy who work as a web developer ,this stage carried out using figma prototype ,before i did that usability testing ,i already prepared a requirements ,scenario and tasks for my website tester.
1st task : i ask to my prototype tester to register and sign in.
2nd task : i ask to my prototype tester to buy some product untill the. payment succees.
3rd task : i ask to my prototype tester to search product from searchbar.
i already recorded the documentation while im doing an interview/usability testing with my tester, here’s the video :
Closing.
This is the final part of my 1st doing study case in a proper way, i got a lot of knowlege from doing this, thanks to Eduwork who has taught me almost 3 months back ,and special thanks to my mentor mr.umam, thank you so much for guiding me and giving me alot of advices, i feel very helpful for my next career as a UI/UX designer, I am very open for receiving criticsm ,advices ,and suggestions from you guys who read my study case, i wanna keep improving my skill as a UI/UX designer.
